Walla Walla University’s
chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) raised US$18,000 from its March 1
gala event held at the Walla Walla Country Club. The funds will go toward the
group’s current water system project in Pucutuni, Peru.
Throughout the evening
attendees enjoyed great food while hearing presentations on the history of the
university’s EWB chapter and current Peru project. They also heard about
project details from EWB’s current team members.
As part of the event, the
club planned a Dessert Dash where each table of guests made bids, with the
highest bidder being first to gather his or her most sought-after dessert. The
club raised more than US$2,000 from this mini-auction.
Following the Dessert Dash, a
live auction featured items native to the area, as well as professor Tom
Thompson’s Catawba grape juice, a canvased photograph by a local photographer,
and a trip to a resort.
After the live auction, two
categories were opened for donation: project expenses and “gifts from the
heart.” Project materials and air fares were several of the items available for
bidding.
“It was a
very rewarding experience to see the generous support behind the project. It
was impressive,” says Katie Sweezey, EWB social vice president.
