Forget the theres nothing to do excuse. Plenty of active
singles are out having a great time, living their lives to the fullest. So find
a sitter for the cat and dont come home until youve quit complaining about
being single.
1. Recruit friends and family.
If your family is like most, getting them involved in your
love life wont be a problem. Ask them for support, not dates. They can cheer
you up, boost your ego, and generally help you get ready to face the scary dating
pool. If getting fixed up rates up there with a root canal, let them know at
the start that youd rather not go out with that friend of a friend who hasnt
had a dateever. But chances are your network can hook you up with a few gems,
so dont totally rule out blind dates.
2. Attend church events and activities.
While there is no official singles organization at the division
level, activities for singles ministry continue to take place in local conferences.
You can look for a listing of whats going on in your area at www.sda-today.com
or www.family.nadadventist.org. If theres not an active Adventist singles group
in your area, recruit a single friend to help you start one.
3. Check out Adventist Internet Resources Directory.
This site lets you know whats going on in singles ministries.
It connects you to 11 popular singles sites, including Adventist Friendship
Caf and Adventist Singles Online: www.atoday.com/resources/directory/
Programs_and_Ministries/Singles_Ministries/.
4. Find a Bible study group.
Check around your city for a weekly Bible study. Try a nondenominational
one. Austin, Texas, has Austin Live! and Nashville, Tennessee, has Music City
Metro. A great ministry to young adults, primarily singles, these groups teach
basic Christian truths and create a great place for fellowship. And better yetstart
your own. Theres nothing like getting a group together that includes Adventists
and other Christians you know. Not only will you experience fellowship, youll
be able to engage in challenging conversation and learn about other faith groupsand
of course, other people.
5. Shop online.
Check out Adventist Singles Online, a free Web site connecting
Adventists to other single Adventists who share the same beliefs. Or join more
than 1,300 Adventist singles online at Shining Star Christian Singles Matchmaking
International Web site.
6. Volunteer.
Become a mentor or help out at an animal shelter. Work at
a soup kitchen or teach someone to read. Youll meet other socially conscious
folks and feel a lot better about yourself in the process.
7. Take a fabulous vacation.
If youre the outdoorsy type, book an adventure trip. You
can go safari in Africa, white-water rafting, mountain climbing, sailing, or
skiing. Youll meet lots of people out enjoying life and get some great stories
of your own.
8. Go to a bookstore or join a book club.
Stores such as Books-A-Million and Barnes and Noble now
have cafs where you can while away some free time with a great book or just
enjoy people watching. Browse the right sections, and youll meet a myriad of
new people. Become a book club regular, but women, stay away from the all-women
groups still getting weepy over The Bridges of Madison County.
9. Take up a sport.
Join a softball team or take a martial arts class. Visit
the local park with your dog or test out a new pair of rollerblades. Just do
something!
10. Get educated.
Continuing education classes can be a gold mineif you know
which ones to take. Women should enroll in a finance class, such as Managing
Your Portfolio or Get Rich in Real Estate. Computer courses are also a plus.
Men are bound to be the center of attention in a pottery or ceramics class.
