Sound Bite

“If it took a dollar to get into heaven, there will be people there trying to get in with 99 cents!”

—Walter Pearson, Jr. , during a Breath of Life program in 2008, broadcast on 3ABN

Kim asked her primary Sabbath school class to draw pictures of their Bible stories. When she saw Kelly’s picture, which showed four people on an airplane, Kim was puzzled. Turning to the girl, Kim asked, “Which Bible story does this represent?”

“The flight to Egypt,” Kelly replied.

“I see,” said Kim, “so the woman must be Mary, this man must be Joseph, and the baby is Jesus. But who is the fourth person on the plane?”

“Oh, that’s Pontius, the pilot,” replied Kelly.

Years ago I was the leader for our church’s lively kindergarten Vacation Bible School students. One girl remarked to another child next to her, “I wonder how old Mrs. Moyers is.”

“I don’t know,” the other replied. “But her girl, Julie, is 5. So Mrs. Moyers must be at least 12.” [Julie was their classmate.]

I left the room for a minute as I chuckled—I didn’t want to embarrass my small charges or make them feel foolish. At the time, I was actually 33!

We did lots of fun things together in class, and maybe they were comfortable thinking that I wasn’t much older than they were. Numbers don’t matter nearly as much as being young at heart!
