While sunscreen is good to use year-round, it is especially important on summer days when people are participating more in outdoor activities. Here’s some interesting information about sunscreen from www.skincancer.org.
The differences between sun protection factor (SPF) ratings:In vitro tests have shown that SPF 15 sunscreens filter out 93 percent of ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, while SPF 30 protects against 97 percent and SPF 50 protects against 98 percent. It is important for the sunscreen to include broad-spectrum protection that also shields adequately against ultraviolet A (UVA).
In January 2011 definitive clinical research from Australia showed for the first time that sunscreen can drastically reduce melanoma incidence. Researchers found that daily application of an SPF 16 sunscreen to the head, neck, arms, and hands reduced melanoma incidence by 50 percent in subjects studied for more than a decade. Only 11 melanomas developed in the daily sunscreen users, versus 22 in the control group. Even more impressive, invasive melanomas (those that penetrate beyond the skin surface) were reduced by 73 percent (three tumors versus 11), and those that were found in the sunscreen group were smaller on average and more readily curable.*

A longtime friend and pastor, Floyd Hilliard, told the following story:
Soon after he entered the ministry, Hilliard was asked to conduct a funeral for a person he hadn’t known. The funeral was to be in a seaside resort approximately 50-75 miles from where he and his wife lived. Realizing that the funeral was scheduled for 4:00 p.m., the couple decided to spend the day enjoying the activities of the resort.
After the funeral service and interment, the person who had invited Hilliard to conduct the service thanked him for the inconvenience and trouble it had caused them, saying how very much they appreciated the Hilliards’ coming.
Hilliard, thinking of the fun he and his wife had that day, replied, “Oh, think nothing of it; we enjoyed it tremendously.”
