Give & Take

HAPPY PEOPLE

According to an article in the January/February 2014 edition of
Vibrant Life (see a short video on the article at http://www.vibrant life.com/?p=2876), happy people have these four qualities in common:

“Judas knew the cost of everything but the value of nothing.”

CAMP MEETING MEMORIES

My earliest camp meeting memory was at Oklahoma Sooner Road (Oklahoma camp meeting) when I was about 5. I had a wart on one hand, and my parents took me to the medical tent. The doctor looked at it and then left me waiting such a long time that I fell asleep. When I woke up, the wart was gone. At least that’s what I remember now, 70 years later!

Four generations of Adventists that attended the 1945 camp meeting include my parents, Joe and Neva Day, and my brother Bill and me (Carlotta) in the front. In the back is my grandmother Enid Day, flanked by my great-grandparents Effie and Will Fisher.

ARE YOU GETTING SLEEPY?

In this
Adventist Review we’ve devoted several articles to the topic of sleep. Here are a few facts about sleep that you might not know.

First, newborns sleep between 14 to 17 hours a day, with one to three hours spent awake (and on an irregular schedule, which parents can attest to!).59 2 8

Most healthy adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night; however, some are able to function without sleepiness or drowsiness after as little as six hours of sleep. Others can’t perform at their peak unless they’ve slept 10 hours.

While some adults and children need to nap, the majority of teenagers probably nap in the afternoon because they aren’t sleeping enough at night.

Rates of insomnia increase as a function of age, but most often the sleep disturbance is attributable to some other medical condition.
