Give & Take

ROMANS AND MATH

I have two children attending Lexington Junior Academy. My oldest, who has attended since first grade, just finished fourth grade. This past spring she was doing a math assignment, finding angles. One of the angles that she did was 323 degrees. Immediately she commented. “It’s like Romans 3:23: ‘For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.’ ”

Yay! She is thinking of Bible verses while doing math. This is Adventist education at its finest: when the spiritual shows up in everything you do—and in ways that you least expect!

ABUSE PREVENTION EMPHASIS DAY

The fourth Sabbath in August has been designated on the Seventh-day Adventist world church calendar of special Sabbaths as Abuse Prevention Emphasis Day. This year’s focus is on abuse against women (enditnow); the date is August 22.

It is an uncomfortable subject for many people, but abuse is a serious problem for everyone—Adventists are not immune. Abuse in any form deforms the body of Christ—for the victim, for the perpetrator, and for the church that is left with hurting members.

The General Conference Women’s Ministries Department, in conjunction with Family Ministries, Health Ministries, Children’s Ministries, Youth Ministries, the Education Department, and the Ministerial Association, has prepared materials for the prevention emphasis day. Ask your local church/conference for information. Visit these sites for resources and information: Adventist Women’s Ministries and www.enditnow.org.59 1 4

THINK BLUE

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, and are high in potassium and vitamin C. Not only can they lower your risk of heart disease and cancer; they are also anti-inflammatory. Much of the power of blueberries lies in their deep-blue color. That hue, a by-product of natural compounds, can help protect the brain’s memory-carrying cells (neurons) from the damaging effects of oxidation and inflammation. Blueberries, like other berries, also have a high water content, which helps hydrate the skin and other cells in the body.

IN 21 WORDS

This past May these three seven-word statements, written by associate editor Lael Caesar, appeared on our Facebook page (a new #7wordproverb is posted daily on Twitter and Facebook). We share them with you here:

Rules should not change because someone fails.

God does not change because everybody fails.

God’s rules never require more than enough.
