There has been much said about the situation in Ferguson, Missouri, since the death of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson and the grand jury’s decision not to indict Wilson for the killing. But perhaps no other message has been quite as powerful as that of New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson. Watson, a devout Christian, responded to events on his Facebook page in one of the most articulate posts I’ve since read on the subject. His message also went viral.

Of course, his words have created questions, as this statement in particular seemed to leave a few perplexed: “Ultimately the problem is not a SKIN problem, it is a SIN problem.”

“SIN is the reason we rebel against authority,” he continued. “SIN is the reason we are racist, prejudiced, and lie to cover for our own. Sin is the reason we riot, loot, and burn.”

From our perspective, sin is indeed why we go wrong. But to those who aren’t familiar with the controversy between good and evil, blaming sin for injustice may seem like taking an easy way out, or using some sort of scapegoat. However, we understand what’s at play here. We know the very real battle waged between the Prince of Peace and prince of darkness. Thankfully, we also know how this is all going to turn out.

Watson concluded his post echoing in kind: “The cure for the Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Eric Garner tragedies is not education or exposure. It’s the Gospel. So, finally, I’M ENCOURAGED because the Gospel gives mankind hope.”

Our job in this broken world is to hold fast to the Peacemaker, our Champion of justice, believing in His ability to right all wrongs as He gives us His grace and humility to do better in this world for as long as He chooses for us to be here.
