Give & Take

Adventist Life

I was visiting a church in Maryland when the strangest thing happened. During his welcome, the pastor told the congregation that he had invited his friend Rick to church. He asked Rick to stand. The friend stood, a little shy but wearing a warm smile. The pastor immediately walked over, held out his hand, and said, “Give me your wallet.” The church filled with laughter, and Rick reluctantly handed over the precious item. The pastor peeked inside, gave an impressed nod, and then walked away.

After looking around the church a bit, he pointed and asked whomever his finger landed on to join him in the aisle. A young woman, just as shy as Rick, made her way to the pastor. Without hesitation the pastor wrapped his arm around her shoulder, gave her a peek inside the wallet, and asked, “What are you doing tonight?” The pastor then refused to let either sit until they had agreed to go out on a date!

Camp Meeting Memories

One of my most inspiring memories was the closing meeting of camp meeting in Gladstone, Oregon, some 40 years ago. The ministers’ chorus sang the lovely hymn “Never Part Again,” and from the far reaches of the tent came the golden voice of tenor Pastor Sunny Liu.

It was awesome.

Sound Bite

“There is nothing more solid, more complete, than the love of Jesus. His love is the most solid truth the church has ever possessed.”

—Pastor Jose Cortes, Jr., at the Greater New York Conference united camp meeting’s youth tent, New York, September 2014
