I love Communion services. They represent one of the most significant moments in the life of a church. They help me refocus from my agenda to His gift. They remind me that we are not yet home. They call me to service.

Like you, however, I have noticed that a number of Adventists choose not to partake in the foot-washing service. I don’t want to speculate as to the reasons—even though I have some ideas. What a pity that these precious family members miss such a great opportunity to serve one another. True, we do not want to partake in Communion in an unworthy manner (1 Cor. 11:27-29) or knowingly harboring resentment, but we do not need to bring anything to the table. In fact, we cannot bring anything—except for a thankful heart.

At the beginning of a new year, already showing some age in our fast-paced time, I want to tell my family, friends, colleagues, members of my local congregation, and even the readers of this venerable magazine that I want to serve you this year. Just for a moment, imagine me kneeling before you and washing your feet. Picture the quietness of the moment as we pray together and ask God to bind our hearts to His and to one another. Visualize this experience duplicated millions of times around the globe as we recognize our utter need of Jesus and forgiveness and transformation. What a moment this could be—all bundled in the simple act of kneeling and washing all sorts of feet.

As you enjoy a Communion service in your part of the vineyard, don’t let this wonderful opportunity pass by. Take the plunge, kneel (or sit) before your brother or sister, and tell them that you are ready to serve.
