The following information is not an exhaustive tally of reports and Web sites. It is, rather, a place to start: to recognize the need in Rwanda and elsewhere and perhaps help others.

  • Rwanda: Aid plea for genocide rape survivors

KIGALI, 15 Apr 2004 (IRIN) - African Rights, a human rights organization, has appealed to the international community to provide medical aid for women who were raped, widowed and infected with HIV/AIDS during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. . . .

  • Rwankeri Secondary School of the Seventh-day Adventist Church needs assistance (Reported by Dr. Athanase Rutebuka, in Berrien Springs, Michigan; and Pastor Seraya Mbangukira, in Nairobi, Kenya. Mbangukira stayed with Carl Wilkens during the 1994 crisis in Rwanda, and recently returned from furlough in Rwanda after being away for eight years.)

The Rwankeri Secondary School, in the Buhoma District, Province of Ruhengeli, Rwanda, is trying to construct a bathroom unit and rain water collection system. The project consists of building three big tanks that will collect rain water from the roofs of existing buildings and the construction of a bathroom unit. The unit is for 300 dormitory students. It will have 10 toilets, 10 shower rooms, 12 urinary stations, and six sinks for hand washing. Due to the scarcity of water in the area, the facility will be used mainly at night.

The importance of this project goes beyond providing a good facility to students. The facility will also improve their health and that of the community surrounding the school, now exposed to various hygiene problems that result in a variety of diseases.

The existing dormitory is a classroom that was converted into a dormitory in 1988 to house 300 male students. The school managed to build a traditional toilet unit at about 100 meters from the dormitory; however, (a) the pit is not deep enough (about 3 meters) to prevent sanitation problems due to geological factors (it's a rocky, volcanic region); and (b) it becomes a challenge to use it at night (especially when it's raining).

The existing low pressure water is distributed to many mission station residents including a heath clinic. This leaves an even lower pressure water for the school, the latest addition to this water system. This project is estimated to be completed in 10 weeks at a cost of about US$25,000.00.

In addition to this project, a girls' dormitory is needed. The cost averages about US$150,000. The boys' dormitory at Rwankeri was built in 1993. In the past, the girls in Rwandan schools were few, but nowadays there are some schools where the girls outnumber the boys. [The Adventist Church is sponsoring the women's dormitory at Gitwe College (secondary school) in Central Rwanda.] To find out more, or how you can donate to these (and other) specific projects, visit www.adra.org. • Report from Rwanda, by ADRA Denmark director Borghild Rasmussen:

I just came back home [October 1, 2004] after a visit to Rwanda where ADRA Denmark, together with ADRA Rwanda, are implementing two projects: a health project in the western part of Rwanda in the Mugonero Health District and a education project in the eastern part of Rwanda, including teacher training and Functional Adult Learning (literacy). I participated in the celebration of 4,000 FAL learners' graduation on September 8, made the detail planning of a mid-term internal review of the education project, and visited Mugonero for planning with the new prime minister [in regard to] the health project.

There are a lot of needs in Rwanda in so many ways. What I want to stress is the need for a planning and coordinating body in order to maximize the impact in people's lives of the money donated. I do not know what kind of money we are talking about, but I do know that even a small [amount of] money can have great impact if the planning and handling is done well. . . . Daniel dos Santos is the new director for ADRA Rwanda. . . .
