Questions for Reflection
or for Use in Your Small Group

Return to Main Story

1. Have you ever been moved by a work of art in the way our author experienced it? If so, how have you used that experience to enhance the faith of others?

2. How does an artist (a painter, a musician, a poet) arrive at their conception of the biblical message? Are they to be held to a different standard from, say, the biblical scholar or theologian? In other words, to what extent should their work be subject to the kind of criticism and analysis we give to those coming to Scripture from other disciplines?

3. Reread the biblical text (Gen. 22). What levels of consonance or variance do you see between it and the artistic interpretation of Caravaggio? (Compare Ellen G. White's description of the incident in Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 147-153.)
