1. Remember that they are just like you-except that their language is sign language. Deaf people are your equals. Show respect and don't "talk down" to them.
2. Don't be afraid to carry on a conversation by writing, typing on the computer, etc. Deaf people often must use these means to communicate.
3. Learn some sign language. It shows that you care, and you may also find it useful in daily family life. Children will find it a fun and practical skill to learn.
4. Act normally when communicating with the deaf. If you seem overly friendly, they may wonder about your motivation.
5. If a deaf person has some hearing, speak slowly, normally, clearly, and distinctly. Make sure your mouth movements are clear but not exaggerated.
6. Get a good book or video about deaf people and carefully study their culture. Understanding their world provides greater confidence and ease.
7. Love deaf people, but don't let them ever get the idea that you are entering their world to try to control or manipulate them. Many deaf people greatly resent "do-gooders" who try to force their way into the deaf world.
