n October 8, General Conference officials honored GC education director Humberto Rasi (pictured above with wife, Julieta) for his dedicated service to Adventist education.
Rasi received the Medallion of Distinction, the church's highest award in education. Rasi, who will be retiring at the end of the year, served the church for 45 years on two continents as an educator, editor, and administrator. Rasi is widely known as a major force in integrating faith and learning.
In other business, the General Conference Executive Committee:
Elected officers for the church's three newest world divisions. The new African divisions were restructured from the old Africa Indian-Ocean (AID) and East African divisions (EAD), parts of the Euro-Africa Division, and the Southern Africa Union which was attached to the General Conference.
Geoffrey G. Mbwana (Tanzania Union president), Blasopis Ruguri (EAD secretary), and Sergie Ferrer (Pakistan Union Section treasurer) were elected as the president, secretary, and treasurer of the East-Central Africa Division.
Pardon Mwansa (president, EAD), Paul Ratsara (secretary, AID), and Jannie Bekker (treasurer, South Africa Union Conference), were elected president, secretary, and treasurer of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division.
Luka Daniel (president, AID), Gilbert Wari (president, Central-South Cameroon Mission), and Ceazar Hechanova (treasurer, AID), were elected president, secretary, and treasurer of the West Africa Division.
Harold Baptiste, North American Division secretary, was elected as a general vice president or the General Conference. Baptiste replaces Calvin Rock who recently retired.
Larry Evans, special assistant to the North American Division president, was elected General Conference undersecretary. Evans replaces Athal Tolhurst who is retiring.
Roy Ryan, special assistant to the GC treasurer, was elected associate treasurer, replacing Gary DeBoer, who is retiring.
Garland Dulan, an associate GC education director, was elected education director, replacing Humberto Rasi, who is retiring.
Wilfred Sumagasi, currently a lawyer in private practice in the Philippines, was elected as an associate director of the GC Trust Services Department.
