An Open Letter to My Sister

BY MONIQUE NELSON

Return to Main Story

Dear Michele,
You said once that you wanted to write Daddy letters and save them for him to read when Christ came. I said, "That's crazy. The last thing on Daddy's mind will be some letter when he and Jesus are face to face!" What I did not comprehend was the therapy benefit for you just by "catching Daddy up."

So now that you are gone too, guess what? I'm writing my own letter, even though you may never read it.

There are many questions I have for you and much more to tell you. A lot has happened in the past few months since we spoke. As usual, we stayed on the phone a long time, and I told you that 90 percent of my long-distance calls were to you. You told me the same. "Check ya later," I said. You responded, "All right, 'bye," and that was it. After 25 years of being sisters, that's how it ends?

Two days after, I called you for the last time. Did you hear the phone ring and know it was me? Were you scared? Did you remember a corny joke of mine and laugh? You didn't answer the phone that day. You always answered or called right back.

Who will grill my boyfriends and make them squirm? (Mommy doesn't do a very good job.) Who will be my maid of honor? Who will call me at inconvenient times and make me drop everything or disturb me first thing in the morning? How I wish for another long, boring story about your coworkers. How I wish you still had coworkers.

Being the big, overprotective sister, you always bullied whoever hurt me. But this is on a larger scale. This is the kind of stuff that lets me know that Christ is coming; He's well on His way. I am encouraged by what Mommy says-"All things work together for good to them that love God." Painful, but I know it's true. I love you and miss you in my life. But I always knew if we were faithful in this life, we would see each other again. And there will be plenty of time to "catch up." This time, face to face!

Love,
Monique
