Eight Biblical Reasons to
Help the Homeless

Return to Main Story

1. Jesus was homeless: "As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, 'I will follow you wherever you go.' Jesus replied, 'Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head'" (Luke 9:57, 58).

2. The way we respond to the homeless reflects our walk with Christ: "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. . . . Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me'" (Matt. 25:34-40).

3. God promises to repay us for every act of kindness: "He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done" (Prov. 19:17). "He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses" (Prov. 28:27).

4. We will receive an eternal reward for helping the poor: "When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous" (Luke 14:13, 14). "Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me'" (Matt. 19:21).

5. Helping the poor and homeless will make us happy: "He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy" (Prov. 14:21).

6. God will help us in our time of trouble: "Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble" (Ps. 41:1).

7. God commands us to help the poor and needy: "There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land" (Deut. 15:11).

8. We honor God by helping the poor: "He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God" (Prov. 14:31).
