Suicide: Intervention and Prevention

Where to Get Help
In an emergency, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), national suicide hot line.

If someone you know shows any suicidal tendencies, the American Association of Suicidology recommends getting help from the following sources:

  • A community mental health agency
  • A suicide prevention or crisis center
  • A family physician
  • A private therapist or counselor*

  • American Association of Suicidology. Their Web site, www.suicidology.org, provides information on current research, prevention, ways to help a suicidal person, and surviving suicide. A list of crisis centers is also included. Phone number: 202-237-2280.
  • National Mental Health Association. Call 1-800-228-1114 or 1-800-969-NMHA (6642) for information on depression and its treatment, and for referrals to local screening sites. Their Web address is http://nmha.org.
  • Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention. Their Web site, http://www.suicideprevention.ca/main.html, features resources and information about suicide prevention as well as a list of crisis centers.
