Give & Take

History Lesson

The August 21, 2014, Adventist Review had comments in it about Hymns and Tunes (p. 5), one of the earliest Adventist songbooks. It reminded me of something that might be of interest to readers.

My grandfather, Henry Elmer Simkin, was working for the publishing house in Battle Creek when my father was born in 1898. He was working there when Hymns and Tunes was first published, and kept the original press proofs of the whole book. After he retired, he was attending church at the Forest Lake Academy church. He decided that those proofs should be in the archives at the publishing house. He sent them to the Review and Herald (I don’t know where they are now). One day soon after, while he was at church, news came to him that his house was on fire. He was glad he had sent those proofs to the Review!

When I get to thinking about my grandfather and the publishing work, I also think of my father, Lloyd Warren Simkin, and the work he did at the Southern Publishing House (called the Southern Pub at our house) in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a Linotype operator and produced the printing of all of the Watchman magazines for four years. Watchman was later changed to These Times and was abandoned to Signs of the Times shortly after the publishing house in Nashville was closed.

Can there be a punishment greater than to be allowed to glimpse the wondrous things that, heretofore, human eyes have not seen, nor ears heard, nor been imagined in the minds of men; and then be told that of these things you can never partake—and you hear these words: “Depart from me, I never knew you”? Maybe hellfire is merciful after all. (See 1 Cor. 2:9 and Matt. 7:23.)
