Editorial

It still startles and dismays me when I peruse the headlines at Web sites that blanket their home pages with “news.” I realize that these sites are attempting to cater to everyone, and thus they cover everything from sports to hair trends to religion to royal babies to murder trials to disasters to business to celebrities to . . .

But the lack of wheat among the chaff is discouraging. Not only are many of the stories in dire need of editing and copy editing—the subjects covered are just plain absurd. One example: a young pop star has just changed her signature ponytail hairstyle (yes, this was considered news). And these days, it seems that if it isn’t vapid it’s tragic (which isn’t chaff, but still heartbreaking).

Though it’s harder work, there is wheat to be found. Food that is uplifting and encouraging. One example: Bretagne, the last serving 9/11 Ground Zero search dog, is still working. The Today Show published the story on September 10, 2014 (available at www.today.com/pets/9-11-ground-zero-search-dog-still-lends-1D80137575) with photos and video—and with heartwarming and bittersweet details that bring awareness, sadness, and joy. And inspiration. I almost missed this story, which was buried down the page.

And there’s even better: we have the best news ever in Jesus Christ! Our church and its members do amazing things. How often do our stories, our good stories, make the “front page”?

I’m not talking about burying bad news. I’m simply saying that something is missing in my newsfeed.

At a time when the daily news is fraught with darkness, with banality, we need to gather wheat from the floor and figure out how to feed it to the world.

Help give wheat to the world. Show them love. Show them Jesus. Show them the future. How can we do it?
