Give & Take

Adventist Life

A few months ago Adventist Review posted this Tolkien quote on its Facebook page, writing, “What do you think about this quote: ‘Not all who wander are lost.’ ”

One person’s comments had the staff smiling: “If you know the truth, you can’t undo what you know, therefore you are not lost. Unless you get Alzheimer’s and cannot remember.”

SHADOW OF A CROSS: For several months many problems had arisen that were causing my wife and me a lot of anxiety. One day, as we drove into our driveway, we were startled to see a large blue cross on our garage door. We wondered if it was a sign of God’s blessing and encouragement, or someone’s spray-painting artistry.

As the door opened, the cross disappeared. We realized that the angle of the bright sun had cast the shadows of the corner street signs onto our garage door. Their shadows formed a perfect cross.

We took courage from it—there is always hope in the cross of Jesus.

Sound Bite

“Only by knowing God can we know ourselves—and both require the Holy Spirit.”

—DONALD FAHRBACH, MUNISING, MICHIGAN

Poem

Untouched

Slowly, reverently
Feather by feather
I fold the wings,
Placing temptation
Beyond my reach.
I settle safely
Beside the still water
in which
I will never die,
to search the yearnings
of an Icarus
Who never sought
the Sun.
