My mother had been Ingathering during the day in Liberal, Kansas. The businesspeople had been generous in their giving, and my mother had said “Thank you” many times that day.
As evening approached she rushed home to start the milking in our little dairy. Needing a cow to move its foot, my mother said, “Hoist,” which it did. My mother immediately replied, without thinking, “Thank you!”

In 1939 our family was all gathered at Grandpa and Grandma’s house for dinner. The food was being passed around, and my cousin Jimmie was next in line for the delicious gluten steaks my grandmother had made. He took some to try since he’d never had them before. He tasted a bite and asked, “Grandma, what kind of meat is this?”
“Oh, Jimmie,” she answered, “That’s Adventist steak.”
A few seconds went by, and a concerned Jimmie replied, “Grandma, who killed the Adventist?”
We all had a few chuckles, Grandma explained, and we went on with our tasty meal.
